Ignorance almost kills young child

Cyprus is known for its regular, lethal poisoning of cats and dogs by use of Lanate which is laced into food and fed to unsuspecting innocent dogs and cats to eat, who subsequently die a horrible death. The government does nothing to stop this dispicable practice by locals, who often wipe out a whole village of its pets.

Equally as horrific this week, although certainly not thought to be a deliberate act was the poisoning of a young british child who was holidaying at a hotel in Limassol. The 3 year old girl asked for a drink of orange squash (my favourite too) which you dilute with water. However, the unwitting barman topped up her glass with detergent, thought to contain nitric acid. It was in the kitchen, in a mineral water bottle, clearly labeled as mineral water, and as it was colourless and odourless, it was not apparant what the barman had done until the girl, upon drinking the juice became violently ill, with breathing problems.

Several days on, it is said that she is making a slow recovery, luckily, as it could have ended up much worse for the poor child. It is too soon to tell if she will make a complete recovery, as the swelling of her throat, larynx and lungs needs to go down significantly before doctors can tell if the burning from the detergent will leave permanent damage.

It is shocking to hear that things like this still go on. It is complete neglect, incompetence, and ignorance on the part of the person who filled that bottle with the detergent, and left it in a hotel kichen, disguised as mineral water.

There are daily calls from the british ex-pat community in Cyprus to end the regular slaughterous poisonings of their pets, now we have a new call to the governemnt - make sure your staff who service the tourists to this island are educated to a decent level or next time (if not this time) they may be on a manslaughter charge.

Lets get lanate banned from Cyprus, and all staff in all tourist establishments educated!

Save our pets and our children!

Check the Cyprus mail archives for stories on many lanate poisonings of animals. Search keyword 'lanate' should bring up many.

What a terrible thing to do to animals. My heart aches when I hear of things like this.
